A fear of cats is surprisingly common place and has a name, Ailurophobia, from the Greek word ‘aílouros’, meaning cat. Cats, particularly black ones, have for hundreds of years long been associated with superstition and folklore and may partly be the reason why some people feel the way they do about them. Interestingly, people are divided into those who adore cats and those who hate them; for some they just dislike the feel of a cat’s fur, while others are terrified to be in their presence. Sufferers know they are not in danger and their feeling of intense fear is irrational; even reassurance from others doesn’t help. Sufferers at first become breathless and may begin to excessively perspire. As the anxiety builds, sufferers may shake, have palpitations, be unable to think clearly or speak properly. If the cat isn’t removed, the situation could precipitate a panic attack.
